For centuries, the Great Pyramid of Giza has been described as a perfect four sided structure. From ground level, this description seems accurate. Aerial views reveal a different reality. Each side of the pyramid is slightly indented along its center. The result is not a four sided pyramid, but an eight sided one. This interpretation was first introduced to the local audience by Ivan Petričević, author at kozmos.hr.

Early aerial observations

In 1926, British pilot P. Groves captured aerial photographs of the Great Pyramid. These images revealed subtle concave indentations on each face of the structure. The indentations are symmetrical and consistent across the entire height of the pyramid. They are not the result of erosion or later damage.

What eight sides really mean

When each face curves inward at the center, the pyramid no longer fits the definition of a regular four sided shape. Geometrically, it becomes an eight sided pyramid with concave faces. This feature is most visible from the air and during equinoxes, when sunlight hits the structure at a low angle.

Scientific analysis of the geometry

Physicist and mathematician Akio Kato from Kanagawa University published a detailed analysis in 2023. His conclusion is clear. The Great Pyramid is not a regular four sided structure. It is a deliberately designed concave eight sided construction. According to Kato, this geometry improves force distribution from the base to the apex and increases overall structural stability.

Mechanical advantages of concave faces

Concave surfaces create a self reinforcing effect. Under the pressure of upper stone layers, blocks compress inward toward the center. This reduces lateral movement and structural fatigue. Flat horizontal constructions degrade faster under similar conditions. This principle is also applied in modern engineering.

Endurance through millennia

The Great Pyramid has stood for more than 4,500 years. During this time, it endured intense rainfall, temperature extremes, and multiple seismic events. Estimates suggest hundreds of severe storms without loss of core structural integrity. Its eight sided geometry likely played a key role in this durability.

Did ancient Egyptians understand this

The level of intentional knowledge remains open to debate. Inside the pyramid are corridors and chambers abandoned during construction. This suggests on site adjustments related to stability challenges. Regardless of intent, the final structure reflects advanced understanding of materials and load behavior.

A monument that still challenges assumptions

The true geometry of the Great Pyramid becomes visible only from the air, a perspective unavailable at the time of its construction. This continues to challenge simplified views of ancient engineering.
