Cat owners often wonder if their feline friend will shed a tear when they’re gone too long—or worse, when breakfast is late. Cat behavior consultant Linda Hall, co-founder of Cat Behavioral Alliance, knows everything about feline sadness and how to comfort grieving cats, reports Daily Paws.

Hall explains that cats don’t cry tears like humans do, but they do express sadness in their own way. “Inky would wander around the house and cry,” Hall recalls, describing her experience with her cat Inky after he lost his human dad, Sebastian. Fortunately, she had the right tools to help Inky recover and eventually return to his happy, lively self. “Just like people, cats in pain or grief need time and love,” she says.

Your cat won’t shed tears over a missed treat, but may cry when lonely or mourning a family member.

Do Cats Shed Tears When Sad or in Pain?

Cats don’t produce emotional tears, but they do show distress through behavioral changes and vocal cries. According to Hall, whether the pain is emotional or physical, the signs are similar. A cat’s crying sound is usually longer and lower in pitch than normal meowing.

Signs your cat might be sad include:

  • Increased vocalization
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Hiding
  • Loss of appetite
  • Decreased activity or increased sleep
  • Changes in litter box habits
  • Grooming less or over-grooming
  • Aggression

Behavioral changes may indicate emotional or physical distress. Hall suggests doing a monthly head-to-tail check to spot irregularities or pain. “If your cat growls, they’re not swearing at you—they’re scared, anxious, or hurt,” she says.

Watery eyes are not a sign of sadness. Tears in cats usually mean medical issues such as conjunctivitis, blocked tear ducts, or eye infections. In those cases, call your vet.

What Does It Mean When a Cat Cries?

Cats rarely use meowing to communicate with other cats. They rely on scent, body language, and touch. So, if your cat cries, it’s trying to tell you something is wrong.

Anxiety
If your pet camera shows your cat crying when you’re away, it might be separation anxiety. Other anxiety triggers include changes in routine, a new pet, or moving homes.

Grieving
Cats form deep emotional bonds with both humans and other animals. After losing a family member, they may cry from sadness and loneliness.

Feline Cognitive Dysfunction
Similar to human dementia, feline cognitive dysfunction affects cats over ten years old. They often become confused and cry for help, especially at night. Installing night lights can reduce nighttime distress.

Arthritis
“Over 95% of cats older than ten suffer from arthritis,” says Hall. “If your senior cat is crying, it could mean pain.” Watch for signs like avoiding stairs or trouble jumping.

Other Medical Causes
Sudden behavioral changes should always be checked by a vet. Hearing loss, hypertension, and heart or kidney disease can make older cats more vocal.

How to Comfort a Sad or Crying Cat

Inky mourned for months after losing his feline dad. He cried daily for three months before recovering. If thinking about Inky makes your heart ache, Hall offers hope: just like people, cats can heal with care and patience.

“The first step is always a vet visit to rule out health issues,” Hall advises. Then focus on what your cat loves most—quality time, enrichment toys, and special treats.

“Spend time with your cat. If you’re away often, ask a friend, family member, or pet sitter to visit,” says Hall. “Let them know your cat is grieving and suggest they simply talk to them.”

During Inky’s grieving period, Hall played music 24/7—David Teie’s “Music for Cats.” “It’s great for separation anxiety,” she notes.

Scent also comforts cats. “Keep your cat’s favorite blanket on your bed so they can smell you or their loved one,” she adds. Above all, Hall advises kindness and understanding.
